No exact desktop card is the Steam Machine GPU equivalent

Steam Machine GPU compared with RX 6600 and RX 7600, showing the semi-custom Machine GPU positioned between both graphics cards

Short answer: no desktop card matches it exactly

No desktop card is an exact twin of the Steam Machine GPU, because Valve built it as a semi-custom chip. On paper, it is a cut-down Radeon RX 7600 with 28 compute units, not 32. In GamersNexus’s GPU-bound tests, it landed closest to the RX 6600, Arc B570 and RTX 3060.

What GPU is actually inside the Steam Machine?

Valve describes a semi-custom AMD RDNA 3 graphics chip, and GamersNexus lists it at 28 compute units, a 2.45 GHz maximum sustained clock, a 110W TDP and 8GB of GDDR6.

Why “semi-custom” means no exact twin

GamersNexus says Valve limits the chip’s power for its 300W supply and thermals, so no retail card has the same mix. Each comparison below uses a separate lens.

RX 7600: same architecture, more compute units

AMD lists the RX 7600 at 32 compute units and 8GB of GDDR6. The Steam Machine GPU has 87.5% of that count, which is arithmetic, not performance.

RX 7600M: the closest laptop match

Tom’s Hardware reports 28 compute units at 50W to 90W.

RX 6600: same count, older design

The RX 7600, RX 7600M, and RX 6600 each resemble the Machine GPU in one specification, but none is an exact match.

TechRadar’s RX 7600 review puts the RX 6600 at 28 compute units on RDNA 2.

In tests: where reviewers place it against desktop cards

In GPU-bound testing, two independent reviewers place the Steam Machine between the RX 6600 and RX 7600.

Where independent tests place it

GamersNexus found it closest to the RX 6600, Arc B570 and RTX 3060. Digital Foundry’s comparison, built on a Ryzen 5 5600X, also placed it between the RX 6600 and RX 7600.

Why the tests don’t fully agree

GamersNexus used MangoHud on SteamOS for the Steam Machine and PresentMon on Windows for desktop cards, and says AMD hardware does better on Linux. Valve’s ray-tracing patch also lifted its RT results 10% to 21%.

What it can and can’t do at 1080p, 1440p and 4K

Valve promises 4K at 60 FPS with FSR upscaling, per Tom’s Hardware, but the measured results favor 1080p.

1080p is the comfortable target

GamersNexus reports games default to a 1920×1080 cap, which Valve says is also its Verified testing resolution. GamersNexus measured 59 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p Ultra.

4K works through FSR, not natively

Ray tracing is the weak spot. GamersNexus recorded 21 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p RT Medium, and PC Gamer 28 FPS at 1440p with FSR Quality. Tom’s Hardware questioned the 4K claim given 8GB of VRAM.

Can you upgrade the GPU, and is building a PC cheaper?

The GPU cannot be upgraded, though GamersNexus says the RAM and SSD can be swapped.

What you can and can’t swap

GamersNexus says neither the CPU nor the GPU is socketable. Tom’s Hardware reports Valve explored a separate add-in GPU but found the size, thermal and cost compromises did not pan out.

🧩 Compatibility Check: Before swapping RAM or an SSD, check Valve’s support documentation for supported memory and drive types. Not verified here.

DIY with the same GPU: the price gap

In June 2026, GamersNexus priced a paper-spec DIY build with a Ryzen 5 7400F, RX 7600 and mini-ITX board at $979 against roughly $1,050 for the 512GB model, adding that the Steam Machine performs below that spec. For a compact build, see mini-ITX compatibility limits and finding a compatible budget motherboard.

Does your current graphics card beat it?

Owners can place a card using the same tests, though launch-era software may shift results.

Cards level with it

GamersNexus put the RX 6600, Arc B570 and RTX 3060 level in GPU-bound tests, and Digital Foundry had the RX 6600 slightly behind.

Cards clearly ahead of it

GamersNexus put the RX 7600 and RTX 5050 ahead, and its Oblivion Remastered run had an RTX 5060 at 43 FPS against 27. It found no overclocking or power-limit options in the BIOS.
