CPU and GPU: what the numbers can’t tell you

🔍 Why It Works: A TFLOPS figure is peak arithmetic throughput, not frame rate, and compute-unit counts describe GPU size, not speed. Tested games, covered below, are the fairer comparison.

Memory, storage and size

The Steam Machine is a roughly 160mm cube and takes microSD cards. The PS5 Pro measures 388 × 89 × 216mm and has an M.2 expansion connector.

Steam Machine vs PS5 Pro price: what you actually pay

As of September 2026, the Steam Machine costs $1,049 to $1,428 in the US, and the PS5 Pro costs $899.99.

Valve’s and Sony’s claims

Valve’s page now says “up to” 4K with FSR 4.1, dropping its 60 fps target (VideoCardz report). Sony says compatible PS5 Pro games reach 60 fps, or up to 120 fps, with ray tracing and PSSR upscaling. For GPU-level context, see which desktop card the Steam Machine’s GPU matches.

SteamOS vs PlayStation: what changes day to day

The Steam Machine plays your Steam library through SteamOS. The PS5 Pro plays PS5 games and over 8,500 PS4 games, per Sony.

Game libraries don’t transfer

Steam purchases belong to your Steam account and PlayStation purchases to your PlayStation account, so games you already own often decide this choice. A Valve designer said games Verified on Steam Deck will be Verified on Steam Machine; the Steam Deck comparison covers the overlap.

🧩 Compatibility Check: On a game’s Steam page, click “Learn more” beside the compatibility rating and open the Steam Machine tab. Valve rates each device separately, and some games have no Steam Machine rating yet.

Storage, memory and controllers

Tom’s Guide notes SteamOS can boot into a desktop mode and connect DisplayPort monitors, so the Steam Machine can double as a home computer. The Steam Machine’s upgrade limits cover RAM and internal storage.

Which should you buy: Steam Machine or PS5 Pro?

Match each machine to criteria you can check yourself.

Choose the Steam Machine if…

  • You want 2TB and a controller for $899.99.

Wait if…

  • You can’t confirm your games’ ratings, or the price on your purchase date.

Known issues and caveats before you buy

Reviewers flagged two Steam Machine caveats worth checking, and the PS5 Pro has trade-offs too.

Single-channel memory

TechPowerUp, citing Gamers Nexus, reports Valve chose single-channel DDR5 to hold the price down. See how RAM slot order affects dual-channel.

📊 Spec Check: Gamers Nexus, as reported by TechPowerUp: dual-channel memory gave up to 19.4% more performance in CPU-heavy workloads, and about 15% in two games at 1080p low settings.

Heat reports and the support route

TechPowerUp also reported a “Red Line of Death” warning when the system reaches 100°C. If your unit shuts down or shows it, contact Valve Support rather than opening the case. On the PS5 Pro side, the trade-offs are the separate Disc Drive and the April price increase.
