Build Your Own Steam Machine and See Where Desktop Parts Differ
Table of Contents
Can you build your own Steam Machine?
Yes, you can build a close desktop equivalent, but not an identical one. Valve’s CPU and GPU are semi-custom and power-limited, so no desktop part matches them exactly.
Valve lists the box at $1,049 (512GB) and $1,349 (2TB), as of June 2026, per Tom’s Hardware. Check Valve’s page for availability.

ℹ️ Risk Note: Prices change quickly and memory costs are volatile. Check each part’s own specification page and the seller’s return and warranty terms before you buy.
Steam Machine specs and the closest desktop parts

Valve lists a semi-custom Zen 4 CPU, RDNA 3 GPU, 16GB DDR5 and 512GB or 2TB NVMe.
What Valve lists
| Spec | Valve lists | Closest desktop part | Key detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU | Zen 4, 6C/12T, up to 4.8 GHz, 30W TDP | Ryzen 5 7400F, up to 4.7 GHz, 65W | Higher power limit |
| GPU | RDNA 3, 28 compute units, 110W TDP, 8GB | Radeon RX 7600, 32 compute units, 8GB | More units |
| Memory | 16GB DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM | 16GB DDR5 DIMM | Different format |

Where desktop parts differ
Valve’s 30W CPU and 110W GPU TDP ratings sit below the 7400F’s 65W default TDP and the RX 7600’s 165W typical board power. See the full Steam Machine specs and upgrade limits and which desktop GPU is closest.
CPU, memory and motherboard: what to check

Desktop boards take full-size DIMMs, so a Steam Machine’s SO-DIMM memory cannot move to a build.
Why Valve’s memory is SO-DIMM
Valve ships DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM, per GamersNexus’s Valve interview. GIGABYTE’s A620I AX (Rev. 1.0), GamersNexus’s board, has two DDR5 DIMM sockets. See what memory Valve’s own box accepts.
Check the board’s own CPU support list
AMD lists the Ryzen 5 7400F as 6 cores on socket AM5.
🧩 Compatibility Check: Check your board maker’s CPU support list for the 7400F’s minimum BIOS, your DIMM model on the memory support page, and the board revision (A620I AX: Rev. 1.0 and 2.0).
One stick or two
GamersNexus says dual-channel performs objectively better; Valve says gaming benchmarks showed little change.
GPU, case and power supply for a small box
Length, PSU format and wattage decide small-build fit.
GPU length against case limit
AMD’s reference RX 7600 is 204 mm long; Cooler Master lists a 366 mm maximum GPU length for its Q300L V3 case (front fan not installed). The RX 7600 is a previous-generation RDNA 3 card; confirm AMD’s current lineup.
🧩 Compatibility Check: Compare card length with the case limit, PSU form factor with case support, and card connectors with PSU cables. Cooler Master lists ATX PSU format for the Q300L V3 and does not mention SFX; GamersNexus paired it with an SFX unit.
Sizing the power supply
AMD’s Radeon RX 7600 specifications list a 550W minimum PSU. Use the card maker’s figure, not Valve’s 300W.
Why Valve’s box draws less
🔍 Why It Works: Valve limits its GPU to 110W TDP and CPU to 30W; GamersNexus measured 173–176W at the wall while gaming.
Is it cheaper to build your own Steam Machine?
As of June 2026, GamersNexus priced a matched new build $71 below Valve’s 512GB box and $211 below the 2TB box.
| Build | DIY total | Valve | Valve’s premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| 512GB | $979 | $1,050 | $71 (~7.3%) |
| 2TB | $1,139 | $1,350 | $211 (~18.5%) |

GamersNexus’s matched build
GamersNexus calls it a paper-spec list, “not a spec we necessarily recommend”; its board, case and SFX supply are not a verified compatible set.
PCWorld’s alternative
PCWorld’s Ryzen 5 7600X and RX 7600 micro-ATX build totals $887.52 as stated (26 June 2026), but its listed parts add to $868, a $19.52 gap.
What price comparisons miss
They omit availability. GamersNexus estimated used CPU and GPU parts might save about $65–$100; check warranty and return terms.
Will a desktop build be faster than Valve’s box?
GamersNexus found the RX 7600 ahead in most games tested, on different software.
Game performance
| Game | Steam Machine vs RX 7600 (fps) | GamersNexus’s gap |
|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil 4 | 94 vs 112 | RX 7600 +20% |
| Oblivion Remastered | 27 vs 26.5 | Steam Machine +1.9% |

What Valve’s box does that a DIY build doesn’t
The box arrives assembled. GamersNexus reports Valve is working with iFixit on replacement parts, and notes the CPU and GPU are not socketable. Desktop builds use socketed parts; see how it compares with other mini PCs.
Common mismatches when you build one
Four checks catch most mismatches before checkout.
Wrong memory format
Confirm the board lists DIMM sockets, not SO-DIMM.
GPU too long or PSU too small
Compare card length with the case limit, and the PSU with the card maker’s minimum.
Wrong GPU brand for SteamOS
GamersNexus reports SteamOS 3.8 excludes NVIDIA graphics on non-Valve hardware.
Build your own Steam Machine: quick answers
1. Can you build your own Steam Machine?
Yes, but only a close equivalent; desktop parts cannot exactly match Valve’s semi-custom, power-limited chips.
2. Which GPU is closest to the Steam Machine?
The Radeon RX 7600: also RDNA 3 with 8GB, but 32 compute units against Valve’s 28.
3. Does the Steam Machine use laptop-style memory?
Yes. Valve ships DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM, so buy desktop DIMMs when you build your own Steam Machine.
4. Is it cheaper to build your own Steam Machine?
Slightly, on paper: GamersNexus priced a matched build at $979 against Valve’s $1,050 (512GB), as of June 2026.
5. Can I run SteamOS on a PC I build?
GamersNexus reports SteamOS 3.8 excludes NVIDIA graphics on non-Valve hardware, so check your GPU brand first.
6. Is an RX 7600 faster than the Steam Machine?
Usually: GamersNexus found it ahead by about 20% in Resident Evil 4, with Oblivion Remastered about tied.
7. What power supply does a Steam Machine build need?
Valve’s supply is 300W and GamersNexus measured 173–176W gaming at the wall; AMD lists a 550W minimum for the RX 7600.
8. Will my GPU fit a small case?
Check lengths: AMD’s reference RX 7600 is 204 mm, so compare your card’s length with your case’s GPU limit before buying.
9. Should I buy used parts for the build?
GamersNexus estimated used CPU and GPU parts might save about $65–$100 versus new, but warranty and return terms vary by seller, so check first.
Before you buy
A desktop build can come close on paper and may be faster, but nothing matches Valve’s semi-custom parts exactly. Prices are as of June 2026; re-check before ordering. We did not test any hardware. For each spec’s source, read Steam Machine specs, upgrades, and limits.
