What Steam Machine PSU Wattage Means in Clear Numbers
Table of Contents
How many watts is the Steam Machine’s power supply?
The short answer: 300W, built in
The Steam Machine has a 300W internal power supply, according to Tom’s Hardware’s Steam Machine review and Gamers Nexus. That is the supply’s maximum output, not what the machine draws. Tom’s Hardware’s spec table lists 110–240V input, so the supply sits inside the case with no separate brick.
Which part of this guide fits you
- Owner or buyer: Sections 2–3 show what the machine actually draws.
- Building a similar PC: Sections 4–5 list the watts and parts to check.
- Considering a repair: Sections 6–7 cover replacement and first checks.
For the wider spec picture, see the Steam Machine specs, upgrades and limits guide.
ℹ️ Risk Note: Opening a mains-powered device or its power supply can cause electric shock, fire or damage. This guide gives no repair steps; use the manufacturer’s method and contact Valve support or an authorized service center.
300W rating vs. the 30W CPU and 110W GPU limits
A rating is a ceiling, not a draw
A wattage rating is the most a power supply can deliver, like the amp rating on a fuse. A 300W unit does not mean a 300W machine.

🔍 Why It Works: A wall meter reads AC input, which includes conversion losses. The supply’s own load is the DC power it hands the parts.
Where the 30W and 110W limits come from
Tom’s Hardware lists a 30W TDP for the CPU and a 110W TDP for the GPU; Gamers Nexus reports the same limits. For the closest desktop card, see the Steam Machine’s GPU equivalent.
Why the BIOS offers no power controls
Gamers Nexus found “no overclocking options or TDP and PPT bypasses” in the BIOS, so the limits cannot be raised there.
How much power does the Steam Machine use at the wall?

Gamers Nexus measured 173–176W at the wall while gaming and a 209W peak in a torture test. These are Gamers Nexus’s wall-power measurements, one reviewer’s readings, not a typical draw.
| State | Wall draw | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Standby | 1W or less | Off but plugged in |
| Idle | 13W | Before the game loop |
| Gaming | 173–176W | Black Myth: Wukong, 30 minutes |
| Torture test | 209W, then 192W | Blender plus FurMark |

Idle and standby
Gamers Nexus calls the machine technically always on unless unplugged, citing the manual.
Gaming load
Draw showed no discernible change across the 30-minute run.
The full torture test
The peak fell from 209W to 192W after a couple of minutes.
Rated, measured and recommended watts compared
The matrix, row by row
| Item | Watts | What it is | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam Machine PSU | 300W | Rated maximum output | Tom’s Hardware, Gamers Nexus |
| Steam Machine, highest reading | 209W | AC wall peak, torture test | Gamers Nexus |
| Radeon RX 7600 | 165W | Total board power, one part | AMD |
| RX 7600 vendor minimum | 550W | System PSU, AMD’s Ryzen 9 5900X test system | AMD |
| Gamers Nexus DIY example | SFX-AP400W | APEVIA SFX unit; not recommended by the reviewer | Gamers Nexus |
| Tom’s Hardware DIY example | 650W | PSU in its estimated parts list | Tom’s Hardware |

Why AC wall watts and PSU ratings differ
Only the first, fifth and sixth rows are PSU ratings, plus AMD’s minimum. The 209W reading is AC input, and 165W covers one part.
What PSU does a DIY Steam Machine-style PC need?
AMD lists a 550W minimum PSU for the Radeon RX 7600, with 165W total board power and one 8-pin connector, per AMD’s RX 7600 specification page. The 550W rests on a Ryzen 9 5900X test system, so check it against your parts.
Check the GPU’s published power fields
The same page lists a 204mm card length and two slots.
Check the CPU and where it is sold
AMD’s Ryzen 5 7600X page shows 105W default TDP, socket AM5 and “Global” availability.
Check the case: PSU form factor and card length
🧩 Compatibility Check: Your case manual lists the PSU form factor it accepts and the longest card it fits; compare 204mm. The PSU’s product page lists its 8-pin lead. See mini-ITX cases for a Steam Machine-style build.

Can you replace the Steam Machine’s internal PSU?
What iFixit’s guide says
iFixit’s power supply replacement guide is an OEM guide rated Moderate, 1–3 hours, 57 steps. It warns against disassembling the supply, which can hold a dangerous charge when unplugged.
Parts and warranty: what is confirmed and what is not
As of 9 October 2026 the guide lists no replacement PSU. Gamers Nexus reports Valve is working with iFixit on parts, and Tom’s Hardware gives a one-year warranty. The sources do not say whether self-repair affects it.
⚠️ Watch Out: Opening the unit can cause shock or damage. Unplug it and try another cable and outlet first, as iFixit advises.
Before you open anything
✅ Do This: Ask Valve support whether repair affects the warranty and which part fits your serial number. For other upgrades, see other Steam Machine upgrades, such as the SSD.
Steam Machine won’t power on? Check these first
Cable and outlet
iFixit says to try a different power cable and outlet before assuming the supply failed.
What standby looks like
Gamers Nexus measured 1W or less on standby, and a paired Steam Controller can wake the machine.
Placement and airflow
Gamers Nexus’s Schlieren imaging shows exhaust leaving straight back in a cone, so it advises clearance from the wall. Check Valve’s manual for distances.
If it still fails, contact Valve support with your purchase date and serial number.
Steam Machine PSU questions, answered
1. How many watts is the Steam Machine PSU?
The Steam Machine PSU wattage is 300W, and the supply is internal, according to Tom’s Hardware and Gamers Nexus.
2. Is the PSU internal, and what voltage does it take?
Yes. Tom’s Hardware lists a 300W internal power supply that accepts 110–240V input, so it is built into the machine.
3. How much power does it use while gaming?
Gamers Nexus measured 173–176W at the wall in one game loop; that is one reviewer’s reading, not a universal figure.
4. How much power does it draw on standby?
Gamers Nexus measured 1W or less at the wall on standby, and the machine is technically always on unless unplugged.
5. Can I replace the internal PSU?
iFixit’s Moderate, 1–3 hour guide covers it, but lists no replacement PSU as of 9 October 2026. Ask Valve support before opening the unit.
6. What PSU wattage does an RX 7600 build need?
AMD lists a 550W minimum PSU for the Radeon RX 7600, based on its own test system; check it against your parts.
7. Is a 400W PSU enough for a DIY build?
Gamers Nexus’s example used an APEVIA SFX-AP400W but says it is not a recommended spec; check AMD’s 550W minimum.
8. Can I raise the Steam Machine’s power limit?
Gamers Nexus found no overclocking options or TDP and PPT bypasses in the BIOS, so the limit cannot be raised there.
9. Does replacing the PSU void the warranty?
Tom’s Hardware gives a one-year warranty; the sources checked do not say whether replacing the PSU affects it. Ask Valve support first.
10. Why is wall power lower than the 300W rating?
A 300W rating is the supply’s maximum output, while wall readings are AC input; Gamers Nexus’s highest was 209W.
Your next step, by reader type
- Owners: treat 300W as the supply’s ceiling; the highest wall reading found was 209W.
