Steam Machine Waitlist or Queue? Read Your Email Correctly

Steam machine waitlist and reservation queue compared in a vector diagram showing Valve’s randomized selection process.

Waitlist or reservation queue: the short answer

The reservation queue holds buyers with a Steam Machine reserved in their name after Valve’s one-time draw; the waitlist holds everyone ranked lower (PC Gamer’s June 22 sign-up explainer). This page sits inside our Steam Machine specs, upgrades and limits guide.

ℹ️ Risk Note: This is general information, not financial advice. Prices and queue rules come from Valve’s announcements as reported and can change, so confirm them on Valve’s own pages before paying.

Reservation queue: a unit is reserved for you

Valve emails these buyers a purchase link in list order.

Waitlist: you move only after the queue ends

Valve invites waitlisters only when a product’s queue in your region runs out.

How the June 25 randomization sorted every signup

One randomization, not first-come

Steam machine waitlist selection explained through a vector illustration of Valve’s one-time randomized signup process.
Valve randomized eligible signups once after registration closed, so signup time did not determine queue position.

Signups closed June 25 at 10 a.m. Pacific. Valve then ran a single randomization and emailed a reservation or waitlist spot (PC Gamer, June 22).

Four product lists, per region

Each model has its own list, run by region, so one queue can outpace another (Valve’s update, quoted by PC Gamer, July 29). Entered several lists? Tom’s Hardware reports you keep only your highest-end reservation.

Purchase emails arrive in list order

  1. Valve randomizes once.
  2. Reservation holders get purchase emails from the week of June 29.
  3. Each buyer has 72 hours to purchase.

🔍 Why It Works: One draw removes the launch-day race, matching Valve’s stated aim of limiting resellers.

Who could join: account, region, and household rules

Account requirements

You needed a Steam account in good standing and a Steam purchase before April 27, 2026 (PC Gamer, June 22).

One reservation per household

Valve allows one reservation per household and checks payment and shipping details to remove duplicates (Tom’s Hardware, June 22).

Can you still join the waitlist?

Later signups join the end of the waitlist (Tom’s Hardware, June 22).

Where the queue stands now and what Valve promised

What Valve promised reservation holders

Valve says it fulfills orders daily and expects reservation holders to get a chance to buy by the end of 2026 (PC Gamer’s July 29 report, Valve’s July 28 Steam Hardware update). That is a chance to buy, not delivery.

What the waitlist gets (and doesn’t)

Waitlisters have no promised date. If moved up, a reservation email comes first, then a purchase email.

No leapfrogging, but lists move at different speeds

No waitlister jumps a reservation holder, yet some regional queues have already ended and begun inviting waitlisters.

Price and the 72-hour purchase window

A purchase invitation gives the buyer 72 hours to complete the order before the offer passes to the next person.

The 72-hour purchase window

Your purchase link expires 72 hours after Valve sends it, and the offer then passes to the next person (PC Gamer, June 22).

Why the price could still move

Valve said its original price goal was no longer viable because of memory and storage costs (PC Gamer, June 22); no increase has been announced.

If your window passes or no email arrives

After 72 hours the offer passes on. The reports we reviewed don’t say what a missing email means, so contact Steam Support.

Scalpers, resale offers, and queue scams to avoid

Why Valve built the queue this way

Valve said it chose a reservation system to limit resellers (PC Gamer, June 22), yet Digital Citizen reported resale listings approaching $3,000.

Offers to sell you a reservation

A listing doesn’t prove a reservation transferred, so treat any such offer with suspicion.

⚠️ Watch Out: Buy only through the link in Valve’s own email, and never share your Steam login or codes. For a payment you regret, contact your card issuer.

Steam Machine waitlist FAQ

1. What is the Steam Machine waitlist?

It holds buyers ranked below the reservation queue; they move up only after the matching queue ends.

2. How does the reservation queue differ from the waitlist?

Queue buyers have a unit reserved and get purchase emails in order; waitlisters have no reserved unit or promised date.

3. Can I still join the Steam Machine waitlist?

Reports say later signups join the back of the waitlist; check Valve’s terms for whether signup is open.

4. Will a waitlist spot get me a Steam Machine this year?

Valve’s end-of-2026 target covers reservation holders only, so a waitlist spot carries no promised date.

5. Do waitlisted buyers skip reservation holders?

No. Valve says nobody leapfrogs a reservation holder; waitlists open only when a regional queue ends.

6. How long do I have to buy after the email?

You have 72 hours from Valve’s purchase email before the offer passes to the next person.

7. How much does a Steam Machine cost?

At June 2026 launch, US prices ran from $1,049 to $1,428; check Valve’s page.

8. Can a household hold two reservations?

10. Which regions use Valve’s queue?

North America, the UK, the EU, and Australia; distributor Komodo handles Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
