Privacy Policy
What we collect, and what we don’t.
The short version: we do not sell your personal information, we do not ask you to create an account, and we collect as little as we can get away with. The longer version — including the advertising and analytics cookies that third parties set on this site — is below.

For the purposes of the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation we are the data controller for the personal data described here. Under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 we are the data fiduciary.

What we collect
We do not require an account to read this site, and we do not ask for personal information unless you choose to send it. Here is everything, why we have it, and how long we keep it.

Short term
Analytics data
Pages viewed, approximate location, device type, and how you arrived. Used in aggregate to understand what readers find useful.
Per provider
Advertising data
Collected by third-party advertising vendors through cookies and similar technologies, to select and measure ads. See the advertising section below.
Per vendor
What we never collect: payment card details, government identifiers, or account passwords. There is nothing to buy on this site and nothing to log into. If any page ever asks you for a card number, it is not us.
Cookies and similar technologies
A cookie is a small file a website stores in your browser. Some are set by us; most of the ones on this site are set by third parties whose services we use.
- Essential cookies keep the site working — remembering your cookie choices and protecting forms against abuse. These cannot be turned off without breaking the site.
- Analytics cookies help us understand which articles are read and where readers come from.
- Advertising cookies are set by advertising vendors to select ads, limit how often you see the same one, and measure performance.
- Affiliate cookies are set by retailers when you click a shopping link, so the retailer can credit a purchase to us.
You can delete or block cookies in your browser settings at any time. Blocking all cookies will not stop you reading this site, though some things may behave oddly.
Advertising and Google
This site is funded partly by display advertising. We do not choose which individual ads you see.
Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this website or other websites.
Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet. You can read how Google uses information from sites that use its services on its partner sites page, and more about its advertising practices in its advertising policy.
How to opt out
- You can opt out of personalised advertising by Google through Google’s ad settings.
- You can opt out of many third-party vendors’ use of cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info or optout.networkadvertising.org.
- You can clear or block advertising cookies in your browser at any time.
If you are in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland
Before any non-essential advertising or analytics cookies are set, you will be shown a consent notice. Advertising vendors receive your data for ads personalisation only if you consent, and you can change or withdraw your choice at any time through the cookie settings link in our footer.
Withdrawing consent is as straightforward as giving it. Ads will still appear, but they will not be personalised.
Analytics
We use a web analytics service to understand which articles readers find useful and where they are struggling. We look at this data in aggregate — totals and trends — not to build a profile of any individual reader.
Analytics data may include your approximate location derived from your IP address, your device and browser type, the pages you viewed, and the site or search that sent you here. Where our provider offers it, IP addresses are shortened before storage.
We also use Google Search Console, which reports the search queries that led people to this site. That data reaches us already aggregated and anonymised.
Affiliate links
Some links on this site are affiliate links. When you click one, the retailer may set a cookie recording that you arrived from here, so that any resulting purchase can be credited to us.
We receive aggregate reports only — click counts, order totals, and commission amounts. We do not receive your name, address, payment details, or what you bought. Once you follow a link to a retailer, that retailer’s own privacy policy governs what happens next.
Full details of how this works are on our affiliate disclosure page.
Why we are allowed to process your data
Where the GDPR applies, we rely on the following legal bases:
- Consent — for advertising and analytics cookies, and for any newsletter. You can withdraw it at any time.
- Legitimate interests — for keeping the site secure, preventing spam and abuse, and replying to messages you send us. We have considered your rights and do not think this processing overrides them.
- Legal obligation — where we are required to retain or disclose something by law.
Under India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, we process personal data on the basis of your consent or for legitimate uses permitted by that Act. The Act’s rules were notified in November 2025 and its substantive obligations are being phased in through May 2027; we intend to be compliant ahead of that date.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising in exchange for money.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you have some or all of the following rights over the personal data we hold about you.
- Access — ask what personal data we hold about you and get a copy.
- Correction — have inaccurate data corrected or incomplete data completed.
- Deletion — ask us to erase your data, subject to any legal obligation to keep it.
- Objection and restriction — object to processing based on legitimate interests, or ask us to limit it.
- Withdraw consent — at any time, without affecting anything done before you withdrew it.
- Portability — receive data you gave us in a machine-readable format.
- Opt out of sale or sharing — if you are in California. We do not sell or share personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of, but the right exists and we will honour it.
- Nominate — if you are in India, nominate someone to exercise your rights if you die or become incapacitated.
- Non-discrimination — we will not treat you differently for exercising any of these rights.
To exercise any of these, email info@thesiliconscroll.com with enough detail for us to identify what you are asking about. We aim to respond within 30 days.
If you are in the EEA or UK and are unhappy with our response, you can complain to your national data protection authority. If you are in India, you may raise the matter with the Data Protection Board of India after first giving us the chance to resolve it.
Children
This site is intended for a general adult audience. It is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18 or from anyone under the age of digital consent in their country.
If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact info@thesiliconscroll.com and we will delete it.
Security, retention and international transfers
This site is served over HTTPS, and we apply reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect the limited data we hold. No website can promise perfect security, and we will not pretend otherwise.
We keep personal data only as long as we need it for the purpose it was collected for, as set out in the table above, and then delete it.
We are based in India, and the third-party services we use — hosting, analytics, advertising, email — operate servers in other countries, including the United States and the European Union. This means your data may be processed outside your own country. Where required, we rely on the transfer safeguards those providers put in place.
Service providers we rely on
We share data only with providers who need it to deliver a service to us: our web host, our email provider, our analytics provider, our advertising vendors, and our affiliate networks. We do not sell data to anyone, and we do not share it with data brokers.
We may disclose information where we are legally required to, or where it is necessary to protect our rights or someone’s safety.
Changes to this policy
We will update this page when our practices change or when the law requires it. The effective date at the top shows when the current version took effect. Where a change is significant, we will make it obvious rather than hoping you do not notice.
